Project Description:
After a month long trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I discovered bossa nova. There was a certain type of "spin-off" version in the US during the 1970's. I listened to some particularly well-known songs from the United States, but those songs lacked the actual essence of what bossa nova truly is. The original songs from Brazil, where many of the singers and artists were from Rio, left the listener with a floating sensation. This typography project outlines the bossa nova or "new wave" movement, the music, the culture, the vibrations of a specific country in a specific moment in time. The photographs were taken by me, either in Rio during my travels, or from a two week road trip through Nevada and throughout all of California. I drove just under 3,000 miles in two weeks for this particular explorative photography project which merged with the bossa nova experience.
Following the typography and photography expedition, I created my version of bossa nova, its definition, and how it can be carried with someone post-integrated experience into the life one must return to. I view traveling the world as a means to bring a piece of that culture with myself, to find moments that are meaningful and can add value to my life. I often recreate those moments through some form of art and design.
